MabesNews.com , Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra. August 5, 2025 – PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) collaborated with the Leuser Conservation Partnership (LCP) by providing activity and operational support to the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) Patrol team operating in the Mount Leuser conservation area. The assistance was distributed directly to the Gunung Leuser National Park Office (BBTNGL), Medan, North Sumatra.
Head of the CSR Department of PT INALUM, Susyam Widodo, said that this support is the company’s commitment to maintaining the sustainability of the natural ecosystem in the North Sumatra region because Mount Leuser is one of the focuses of PT INALUM’s environmental sustainability program.
“Mount Leuser is located in two provinces, Aceh and North Sumatra, and boasts a rich ecosystem. INALUM is committed to ensuring the sustainability of the Mount Leuser ecosystem, particularly in North Sumatra, as it is a vital part of Indonesia’s natural heritage,” said Susyam Widodo.
INALUM provided field uniforms for two patrol teams, animal medication for the patrol teams, and outreach and training for the two forest patrol teams, known as Smart Patrol. In addition, INALUM installed educational signs on Sumatran orangutan conservation, focusing on visuals to further attract public attention and awareness.
Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the few areas in the world that remains a natural habitat for three Sumatran mega-fauna: elephants, tigers, orangutans and rhinos.
and other biodiversity. The presence of orangutans in the Leuser forest plays a vital role in tree regeneration, as they disperse seeds from the fruits they consume.
Ismail, as Director of LCP, expressed his appreciation to INALUM for its cross-sector collaboration with LCP and other conservation partners in conservation efforts. This is key to saving this iconic species from extinction.
“Inalum’s involvement is a concrete example of synergy between industry and conservation. Conservation efforts cannot be carried out in isolation. The active involvement of companies like Inalum is a good example of how the business world can be part of the solution,” said Ismail.
Patrol activities were carried out by a joint team consisting of officers from the TNGL Center and the Sumatran Orangutan Lestari Foundation (YOSL) on June 21-30, 2025. Patrols were carried out by monitoring an area of 2000 hectares with a track length of 24.42 km.
These forest patrols aim to monitor illegal activities such as encroachment and poaching of protected animals, while also strengthening the protection of the habitat of the endangered Sumatran orangutan. During the patrols, the team still found traces of several protected animals, including elephants, orangutans, and Sumatran tigers.
Inalum, as part of the MIND ID mining holding company, is committed to implementing sustainable business practices. Support for the conservation of TNGL aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With this contribution, Inalum hopes to strengthen long-term collaboration to maintain the sustainability of the TNGL area. Preserving Sumatran orangutans and tropical rainforests concerns not only the survival of one species, but also the future of the ecosystem and the people who live there.
